Kafue in August
August is Busanga running at full output. The floodplain dries to golden grass, the lion prides work it in the open, cheetah odds climb, and from late in the month Zambia's only hot-air balloon lifts off over the lechwe herds.
If you only want the answer
August is peak Busanga and the month with the longest booking lead times in Kafue. Expect lions on most plains drives, days of 28.4°C after cold starts, and camps that filled up the better part of a year ago.
The plains at full stretch
No rain in the thirty-year averages, days warming to 28.4°C and nights up to 14.7°C from July's chill. As the surface water shrinks to channels and pools, thousands of red lechwe, big buffalo herds, zebra, roan and oribi pack the open grassland, and from August through October seeing lions on most drives is a reasonable expectation.
This is also the window for Busanga's signature behaviour: prides climbing into the sycamore figs on the island copses, a habit rare enough across Africa that photographers plan whole trips around it. Cheetah, at their strongest in Zambia right here, hunt the same open ground.
The balloon and the haze
Ballooning starts in late August and runs to the end of October, at around $500 per person through the plains camps; Wilderness has periodically thrown in a free flight on stays of three nights or more. Budget for one honest caveat: regional burning sends smoke and haze across western Zambia from August, which softens the light. Photographers should treat it as part of the season's character rather than a flaw.
Booking reality, and the fallback
August is where Kafue's scarcity bites hardest. Six tiny camps on the plains, a short season and growing word of mouth mean the prime weeks are often gone six to twelve months out. If Busanga is full, the strong second prize is the central river country: Musekese, Fig Tree or Mawimbi still deliver a first-rate dry-season safari, with walking, boats and leopard after dark, at a fraction of the plains rates.
