Best time to visit Kafue National Park

Kafue runs on two clocks. The Busanga Plains in the north are a three-and-a-half-month park, open roughly July to early November. The south and centre run far longer, with several camps open most or all of the year. Here is the real calendar.

May to August. June here is genuinely rainless, 0 mm on the thirty-year average, against 282 mm in January. Nothing concentrates animals like water that has stopped falling.

The two-rhythm rule

Treat Kafue as two parks. The Busanga Plains flood from around December to June, and camps up there operate only from May or June to the end of October at the widest, with realistic access from early July: Busanga Plains Camp opens on 15 July, which is the honest ground truth, whatever brochures promising June may say.

The south and centre are different. Mukambi, Kasabushi's campsite, Mawimbi and Musungwa run year-round; Ila closes only in February; Nanzhila Lake Camp runs March to January; McBrides' and Hippo Lodge run March to December. The exception that proves the rule sits in the far south: Nanzhila Plains Camp opens only mid-June to mid-October, the shortest season in the park, because season length tracks ground conditions, not latitude.

Practical notes

  • Book Busanga camps months ahead: the plains hold six small camps, most with only four to six units, and the season is short.
  • June mornings on the plains can be close to freezing in an open vehicle; pack real winter layers for July and August dawns too.
  • From August, smoke and haze from regional burning can soften photography light; it is part of the season, not a fault in your planning.
  • Hot-air ballooning over Busanga runs only from late August to the end of October.
  • Fishing has a national closed season from 1 December to 1 March.
  • Zambia is a malaria area; take prophylaxis whatever the month.
