Routes, nights and transfer times

Kafue National Park safari itineraries

Kafue rewards a slower trip than most parks: it is 22,400 square kilometres, the Busanga Plains are a long way from anywhere and they only open from about July. Below are a three-night plan, a five-night plan across two areas, and routes that pair Kafue with Victoria Falls or South Luangwa, with real transfer times and cost bands built from the camps' own 2026 and 2027 rates.

Updated 23 October 2026

The short answer

Give Kafue at least three nights in one area, and five to seven if you want two areas or the Busanga Plains. Three nights at Mukambi on the M9, four hours from Lusaka on tar, cost about $1,140 to $1,530 per person with park entry at 2026 rates. Five nights splitting the centre with the Busanga Plains run from about $2,640 per person at Kasonso Busanga to $7,100 at Shumba, before transfers, from mid-July to October. Southern Kafue pairs best with Victoria Falls, 204 km from Livingstone to Dundumwezi Gate, and South Luangwa is a Lusaka night and a 1 h 10 Proflight hop away.

How many days you need in Kafue

Three nights is the minimum that makes sense, and only if you stay in one area. Getting there costs most of a day: three and a half to five hours from Lusaka to the river at Hook Bridge, longer to the north and south. Three nights gives you four or five full activity sessions after that. Several camps say the same thing in their own terms: Busanga Plains Camp has a three-night minimum and McBrides' Camp recommends three to four nights.

Five to seven nights lets you combine two areas, which is how Kafue is best seen: the riverine centre for elephant, leopard chances and boats, then the Busanga Plains for lion, cheetah and red lechwe. Self-drivers heading to Busanga should allow seven nights or more, because the plains are another five to six hours of 4x4 track beyond Hook Bridge each way. Ten days or more lets you add Victoria Falls or South Luangwa.

Plan around permit days. Park entry is $20 per person per calendar day, 06:00 to 18:00, so three nights inside the park usually means four fee days. The costs page has the arithmetic.

How you travel: road, 4x4 or charter

Kafue is the most drivable big park in Zambia. The M9 is tar from Lusaka through the centre of the park, transit along it is free and no 4x4 is needed to reach Mukambi Safari Lodge. Beyond the corridor, a high-clearance 4x4 is required, the interior tracks are impassable from roughly December to April, and there is no confirmed fuel inside the park, so fill up at Mumbwa, Itezhi-Tezhi or Kalomo. Wild camping is not allowed anywhere, so every day has to end at a designated camp.

There are no scheduled flights into Kafue in 2026; we found no Kafue route in Proflight's published schedules. Flying means a charter of about an hour from Lusaka or Livingstone, priced per aircraft and arranged by your camp: Lusaka to Chunga takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and Lusaka to Busanga about an hour and a half. Some camps sell road transfers; Hippo Lodge, for example, charges $140 per person each way from Lusaka, 4.5 to 6 hours with stops, in 2027.

Three nights: the central sector from Lusaka

The simplest Kafue trip and the right one for a first visit, a long weekend from Lusaka or the green season. It works all year on the M9 corridor, and best from May to October.

  1. Day 1Lusaka to Hook Bridge on the M9, 270 to 280 km, 3.5 to 5 hours on tar. Last reliable fuel and shopping at Mumbwa, 124 km out. Check in at Mukambi Safari Lodge by mid-afternoon, sunset boat on the Kafue River.
  2. Day 2Morning game drive, midday at the lodge, afternoon drive into the evening. Night drives are permitted in Zambian parks.
  3. Day 3Walk with an armed ranger, or a full morning out; boat or fishing in the afternoon (fishing closed 1 December to 1 March).
  4. Day 4Early drive, then back to Lusaka by late afternoon.

Three nights: costs and alternatives

At Mukambi Safari Lodge, three nights cost $1,080 to $1,470 per person in a chalet at 2026 rates, plus $60 park entry for three drive days: roughly $1,140 to $1,530 per person, before fuel or a road transfer. Our costs page puts the full trip for two, with diesel from Lusaka, at about $2,375 in low season.

On a tighter budget, camp at Kasabushi Camp from $45 per person: three nights for two people self-driving come to about $655 all in, or about $330 each, food extra. For more comfort, Mawimbi Bush Camp is three nights from $1,920 per person in green season and $3,330 from June to October, plus $50 a night in park and bed-night fees, with free transfers from the Chunga airstrip.

A northern alternative: Hippo Lodge, by its own 2027 transfer, 4.5 to 6 hours from Lusaka. Three nights at $380 plus 16 percent VAT, $50 a night in park and bed-night fees and the transfer both ways come to about $1,740 per person. Bring cash; it takes no cards.

Five nights: the centre and the Busanga Plains

The classic Kafue route, possible only from about mid-July to the end of October, when the plains are dry and the camps are up. Two nights on the river, three on the plains.

  1. Day 1Drive Lusaka to Hook Bridge, 3.5 to 5 hours on tar, or charter to Chunga in about 1 hour 15 minutes. Two nights at Mukambi Safari Lodge or Mawimbi Bush Camp.
  2. Day 2Drives and a boat trip in the central sector.
  3. Day 3Transfer to the Busanga Plains: five to six hours of 4x4 track from Hook Bridge, or a charter to the seasonal Busanga strip. Most guests fly; the camps want written confirmation of water levels before self-drivers attempt the road. Three nights at Kasonso Busanga Camp, Busanga Plains Camp or Shumba Camp.
  4. Day 4Dawn drive for the lion prides and cheetah; from late August, a balloon flight at around $500 per person.
  5. Day 5Full day on the plains, with a walk or a sleep-out where the camp offers one.
  6. Day 6Charter back to Lusaka, about 1 hour 30 minutes, or Livingstone.

Five nights: what it costs, and the rains version

Mid-range: two nights at Mukambi Safari Lodge at the 2026 peak rate of $490, plus three at Kasonso Busanga Camp at $540 with park fees included, come to about $2,640 per person with park entry. Upper mid-range: swap Kasonso for Busanga Plains Camp at $950 and it is about $3,930. Top end: two nights at Mawimbi Bush Camp at $1,110 and three at Shumba Camp at $1,600 come to about $7,120. None of these include the charter or road transfer to Busanga, which the camps quote on request.

A second pairing on the plains comes from one operator: Ntemwa-Busanga Camp and Musekese Camp, both run by Classic Zambia Safaris. Ntemwa's own page says walking and boating are only available when you combine it with Musekese. Both quote on request.

Outside the Busanga season, split five nights between Mukambi Safari Lodge and Fig Tree Bush Camp, run by the same family, from May to November: about $2,400 per person in low season and $3,030 at peak, with park entry. Ask what activities each rate includes, as Mukambi's published notes differ on whether drives are extra.

Kafue and Victoria Falls: the southern route

The smart routing if you are seeing the falls: southern Kafue is closer to Livingstone than to Lusaka. Self-drive in a high-clearance 4x4, mid-June to mid-October, when Nanzhila Plains Camp is open. Seven nights, five of them in Kafue.

  1. Days 1 and 2Livingstone and Victoria Falls, two nights. Shop and fill up here; Kalomo is the last fuel on the way.
  2. Day 3Livingstone to Dundumwezi Gate, 204 km on the T1 via Kalomo, about 2.5 hours, then about 60 km and 1.5 hours of dry-season track to Nanzhila Plains Camp. Allow a full day; the camp's own listing quotes five and a half to six hours from Livingstone.
  3. Days 4 and 5Day and night drives on the Nanzhila Plains for small cats and the southern predators.
  4. Day 6Move to the lakeshore, Nanzhila Lake Camp or Konkamoya Lodge, for two nights. Ask the camps for the in-park transfer time, which is not published.
  5. Day 7Lake drives; at Konkamoya, the aardvark night drive.
  6. Day 8Back via Dundumwezi, about 140 km and 2 to 2.5 hours from Nanzhila Lake Camp, then 2.5 hours to Livingstone. Proflight flies Livingstone to Lusaka in about 1 hour 10 minutes for onward connections.

Victoria Falls route: costs and the fly-in version

Three nights at Nanzhila Plains Camp from $275 and two at Nanzhila Lake Camp from $495 come to about $1,815 per person, plus park entry and a foreign vehicle fee for the Kafue days: roughly $1,980 per person for two travelling together. With Konkamoya Lodge instead of the lake camp, park fees for those nights are in its rate and the Kafue part is about $2,650. Livingstone hotels, car hire and fuel are not included. Both Nanzhila camps start from their from-rates; confirm what each includes.

The fly-in version reverses the logic: the Busanga camps are reached by light aircraft from Livingstone as well as Lusaka, and African Parks quotes roughly an hour's flight from either. Three nights on the plains, July to October, after two at the falls, works without any long drive. Charters are quoted per aircraft by the camp.

Kafue and South Luangwa: Zambia's two big parks

Kafue for space, cheetah and self-driving; South Luangwa for leopard and the walking safari. They combine through Lusaka. Eight nights, best June to October, when both parks are at their peak and the walking season runs in the Luangwa Valley.

  1. Day 1Lusaka to Kafue on the M9, 3.5 to 5 hours, or by road transfer. Three nights at Mukambi Safari Lodge, Mawimbi Bush Camp or, in the north, Hippo Lodge.
  2. Days 2 and 3Drives, boats and a walk in Kafue.
  3. Day 4Back to Lusaka. The 16:35 Proflight to Mfuwe is reachable after an early start; a night in Lusaka is the calmer option.
  4. Day 5Proflight Lusaka to Mfuwe, 1 hour 10 minutes, up to three flights a day. Road transfer from Mfuwe to your camp, 35 minutes to almost five hours depending on the camp. Four nights in South Luangwa.
  5. Days 6 to 8Walking safaris, day drives and night drives in the valley.
  6. Day 9Fly Mfuwe to Lusaka, or on to Livingstone via Lusaka.

Kafue and South Luangwa: costs

Three nights at Mukambi Safari Lodge, $1,140 to $1,530 per person with park entry, plus four nights at a South Luangwa lodge from about $470 to $565 per person a night, plus $75 to $110 a night in park fees and levies there, plus Proflight's return fare from $373, come to roughly $3,700 to $4,600 per person. The Lusaka night and road transfers are extra, and some Luangwa camps include their levies, which brings the figure down. Lodge prices for the valley are on our sister guide, southluangwapark.com.

All routes side by side

Rough cost bands are per person sharing, at the camps' own 2026 rates (2027 for Hippo Lodge), including park entry. They are estimates and exclude international flights, charters, tips, drinks not in the rate and nights outside Kafue unless stated.

Picking the right lodge for each leg

On a road leg, choose a camp you can actually reach: Mukambi Safari Lodge in an ordinary car, and Kasabushi Camp, Mapunga Bush Camp & Campsite, Musungwa Safari Lodge, McBrides' Camp and Hippo Lodge with a capable vehicle. On a fly-in leg, let the camp choose the airstrip and arrange the plane. For the Busanga leg, the choice is mostly budget, from Kasonso Busanga Camp at $540 to Shumba Camp at $1,600. Every option, by area and price, is on our where to stay page, and the month-by-month picture is on best time to visit.
