Kafue in February
February is the quietest month on Kafue's calendar. The rain barely eases from January, the ground has nothing left to absorb, and even Ila Safari Lodge, open the other eleven months of the year, shuts its doors.
If you only want the answer
Skip February unless you are a birder with a boat plan. This is the one month when the open-camp list drops to its absolute minimum: Mukambi, Kasabushi's campsite and Musungwa, and very little else.
Marginally drier, practically identical
The long-term averages give February 229 mm over 22 rain days, against January's 282, with highs of 26.6°C and nights at 18.9°C. On paper that is an improvement; on the ground it changes nothing, because every dambo is already brimming and the water has nowhere left to go.
Treat any track on your map as a rumour this month. Self-driving in February means the M9, the lodge access roads and nothing more ambitious.
The shortest open list of the year
That Ila closes now, and only now, tells you more about February than any rainfall chart. What remains is the hard core: Mukambi on the river at the M9, Kasabushi's campsite and glamping tents further south along the Kafue, and Musungwa at the park boundary on the lake. Nanzhila Lake Camp, Konkamoya, McBrides' and Hippo Lodge are all between seasons, and Mawimbi does not price January or February at all.
Why anyone comes anyway
The migrants are at their absolute peak, young antelope crowd every patch of higher ground, and the storm light over a full river is the most dramatic photography Kafue offers. Frogs and flowering miombo round out a naturalist's month that has nothing to do with big cats.
If February is your only window, base at Mukambi and put every activity on the water. No lead time needed: this is walk-in territory, the only genuine walk-in month Kafue has.
